Rickmansworth Young Musicians

The Spring term featured two concerts and the final of the Rickmansworth Young Musician of the Year competition.
Both concerts were well attended and pushed the orchestra to new heights with some challenging repertoire, including Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures from an Exhibition’ and Brahms Symphony No.1. Our 2024 RYMY, Jammal Kashim, played the Glière Harp Concerto with technical excellence and musical brilliance. More recently our pianist friend, Thomas Kelly, has made his solo debut at the prestigious Wigmore Hall as well as giving a private performance for friends of Chorleywood Music at Fiona and Andrew’s at Meadowsteep.
We are looking forward to our Summer Concert which will stretch the orchestra once again with Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony No. 3 and featuring Nicola Tait Baxter performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations.Attachment:

RYMY 2025 & fundraisingNews in brief
Our Autumn term highlights were the Beethoven 9th Symphony
concert and our performance of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker suite
at our family concert in December.
It is now normal for us to have a busy schedule of Christmas
performances and gigs by several smaller groups of orchestra
members and this season there were around a dozen taking
place, from outdoor festival performances to local church
services.
Our programme for 2025 commenced with our February concert
and we have lots more to follow.Attachment:

News in brief
Our summer was busy with activities on Chorleywood common, including a fully staged live orchestral concert; a first for us and the Chorleywood Parish Council and a stall at the annual village day.
However, summer is over and we are well into our autumn season. The orchestra is still on a ‘high’ after performing Beethoven’s 9th symphony in celebration of 200 years since its first performance in Vienna in 1824.
We are looking forward to our December family concert which, this year, will feature Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and will be held at the Rickmansworth School.
The orchestra has invested in a set of timpani to enhance its rehearsals and performances, more about that later.Attachment:

News in brief
This year sees the orchestra’s busiest and most ambitious concert season yet. Not only have we performed Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherazade, the Grieg Piano Concerto with Firoze Madon, the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with soloist Katie Mazur and Dvorak’s 8th Symphony, but we are preparing for a major outdoor summer concert on Chorleywood Common, Beethoven’s last major work, the famous 9th Choral Symphony, in September, followed by a Christmas Nutcracker family concert in December.
We have once again organised and run the Rickmansworth Young Musician of the Year competition which had 36 entries. The three winners and our judges are shown above. There is more about the competition inside this issue.

News in brief
The last few months have been a busy period for the orchestra. We have performed two concerts and our ensembles and bands have had a full schedule of Christmas events. You can read more about that in Christine Deeley’s article in this issue.
We have another orchestral concert in March which will feature the Tchaikovsky violin concerto performed by violinist, Katie Mazur.
The Rickmansworth Young Musician of the Year competition is well under way with 34 entries this year. The concert final will take place on Sunday 17th March, where the top eight young musicians will compete for the title.Attachment:

News in brief
The orchestra is busy rehearsing for concerts in December and January, mainly under the baton of our assistant conductor, Ryan Bunce. At the moment we are focussing on music by Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky and shortly, Howard Blake.
We are also getting ready to launch our annual Rickmansworth Young Musician of the Year competition. This year we have the support of Richard Lawson Pianos, Herts County Council and St James’s Place. The final of the 2024 event will take place in March in front of an invited audience. Details of how to apply for tickets will be available soon.Attachment:
